A practical Z790 foundation for a focused desktop workstation
Build around an Intel LGA1700 processor with an ATX board that combines DDR5 memory, four M.2 connectors, 2.5GbE and Wi-Fi 6E. Explore our motherboards and AI workstation components to plan a complete system. This is a motherboard, not a complete PC or a multi-GPU server platform.
Where this product makes sense
A balanced single-GPU build
A CPU-linked Gen5 x16 slot supports the primary graphics card. The remaining long slots are lower-bandwidth expansion paths, useful for devices whose lane requirements fit them.
Storage without cable clutter
Four M.2 slots accept PCIe 4.0 x4 storage. This board does not provide a native PCIe 5.0 M.2 connector; a Gen5 SSD operates at the negotiated Gen4 link speed.
Wired and wireless connectivity
Intel 2.5GbE and Wi-Fi 6E are suitable for desktop networking. A 10GbE switch does not turn the onboard 2.5GbE port into 10GbE; that upgrade needs a compatible network adapter.
Compatibility and limits
- Use only a supported LGA1700 Intel processor; 14th Gen support can require a BIOS update. Confirm the exact CPU against the current MSI support list and the supplied BIOS before assembly.
- DDR5 non-ECC unbuffered UDIMMs only: DDR4 and server RDIMMs do not fit this platform. Intel XMP 3.0 is supported, but rated overclock speeds depend on CPU, module rank, DIMM population and QVL.
- The current manufacturer specification lists up to 256GB. Achievable capacity depends on compatible DIMMs, CPU and BIOS. Four DIMMs generally impose a lower maximum memory clock than one DIMM per channel.
- HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 1.4 require a processor with integrated graphics. An F/KF CPU cannot supply video through the motherboard display connectors.
- Use an ATX-compatible case, appropriate CPU cooling and PSU connections. Wide graphics cards can cover adjacent expansion slots. The board is not a four-electrical-x16 Gen5 workstation board.
- M.2_3 and M.2_4 support PCIe and SATA modes. Check the current manual for SATA-port interactions, drive population rules and any supported bifurcation before choosing an adapter. No unverified lane-sharing or bifurcation capability is promised.

The commercial product warranty term is 36 months, subject to the applicable eligibility and claim terms. Keep the purchase receipt and serial number. Contact Mineshop for claim intake before returning the board; do not assume a universal regional MSI direct-service entitlement or a fixed repair turnaround. Statutory consumer rights are unaffected.
Six useful answers before ordering
Will it work with a 14th Gen Intel CPU?
The current MSI support specification includes 14th Gen, but the exact processor and installed BIOS must be checked. Update the BIOS as required before relying on CPU support.
Can I reuse DDR4 or server ECC RDIMMs?
No. This model uses DDR5 non-ECC unbuffered DIMMs. DDR4 is a different physical/electrical standard, and registered server DIMMs are not supported.
Are all three long PCIe slots x16?
No. The primary CPU slot is Gen5 x16, while the chipset long slots provide up to Gen4 x4 and Gen3 x1. Slot length alone is not a bandwidth specification.
Will a Gen5 M.2 SSD run at Gen5 speed?
No. The M.2 slots provide up to PCIe 4.0 x4. A backward-compatible Gen5 NVMe SSD can operate there, but its negotiated link is limited by the board.
Why might HDMI or DisplayPort show no picture?
The motherboard outputs require integrated graphics in the installed CPU. Intel F/KF models require a separate graphics card and its display outputs.
Is this a complete workstation, and what arrives?
No. You receive the board and its listed accessory bundle, not a computer. Supply a compatible CPU, cooler, DDR5 memory, storage, PSU and ATX case; confirm BIOS and clearances before building.
