The right CPU cooler must support your processor socket, fit inside your case and handle the work your computer performs. Air and liquid designs have different installation needs, so a larger product is not automatically a better match. Compare the exact mounting support, dimensions and fan arrangement before ordering. A suitable cooling plan also considers memory clearance, case airflow and the noise level you are willing to accept under sustained workloads.

How to choose a CPU cooler

Start with your processor choice and the manufacturer's cooling guidance. Then check the cooler's explicit socket support and required mounting hardware. A matching socket name is only the first step: the assembly must also clear nearby components and fit the available case space. Do not assume an older mounting kit can be reused without confirmation.

Inspect the motherboard layout around the socket, including heatsinks and memory slots. For a tower design, compare its height with the case's stated CPU-cooler clearance. For a liquid design, confirm the radiator mounting position and the space available with fans fitted. A case advertising a radiator size does not automatically establish clearance for every radiator in that class.

Air cooling examples

The ARCTIC Freezer 36 is a tower air CPU cooler with support listed for AM4, AM5, LGA1700 and LGA1851. Its dimensions are 104 × 126 × 159mm, and its two 120mm PWM fans have a specified range of 200–1800RPM. Check the full assembly against the case and board, not just the fan diameter.

The be quiet! Dark Rock Elite lists AM5, AM4, LGA1851, LGA1700, LGA1200 and LGA115X support. Its dimensions including fans are 145 × 136 × 168mm, and its weight including fans is 1.34kg. The published 280W TDP rating is a manufacturer specification, not a universal guarantee for every processor and case arrangement.

AIO cooling: measure radiator and fan space

An AIO cooler places the radiator away from the CPU mounting block. This can change the space demands near the socket, but it adds requirements for radiator mounting, tubing routes and pump connections. Follow the exact product's installation instructions. Do not assume that a liquid CPU cooler automatically runs quieter than an air design; noise depends on fans, pump behavior, settings and workload.

The ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III Pro 280 Black lists AM5, AM4, LGA1700 and LGA1851 support. Its radiator measures 317 × 138 × 38mm, with a stated minimum radiator-plus-fan space of 63mm. Compare those figures against usable space in the chosen mounting position, including nearby board components and cable access.

For a 360mm AIO option, the ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III Pro 360 A-RGB has a 398 × 120 × 38mm radiator. The supplied clearance guidance states at least 63mm, while ARCTIC's drawing shows 66mm. Check the manufacturer's drawing and allow for the complete assembly rather than treating the smaller figure as a universal fit guarantee.

Memory clearance and installation access

Before choosing a tower cooler, compare its layout with your memory modules. A fan positioned over the memory slots can limit usable module height or require an adjustment that increases overall cooler height. Confirm both the board clearance and the remaining case clearance after any permitted adjustment. Lighting and decorative covers do not take priority over a secure fit.

Plan the order of installation so that mounting screws, fan clips and electrical headers remain accessible. Keep cables clear of moving fans and follow the cooler's instructions for thermal-interface material and mounting pressure. Avoid improvising washers, brackets or unsupported mounting combinations. If the cooler is being moved from another system, check that all required parts are present.

Cooling capacity, fan speed and power

Thermal ratings are useful product information, but different manufacturers may not use equivalent methods. They should not be treated as a standardized performance comparison. Consider sustained processor workloads, case airflow and ambient conditions alongside the rating. A cooler that fits a socket may still be poorly matched to the heat and noise requirements of the finished system.

Fan-speed ranges describe control limits, not guaranteed everyday operating speeds or measured acoustics. Higher speeds can change noise noticeably, so choose settings that maintain safe operation without unnecessary noise. Verify motherboard header limits and the correct connection method for fans, pumps and lighting. An AM5 CPU cooler search should lead to those exact checks, not just a socket-label match.

Balance cooling with the rest of the build rather than selecting it in isolation. Graphics hardware can affect internal airflow and radiator space. Use the PC configurator to organize the parts, then check the case, board and cooler documentation for the final arrangement.

EU delivery and product-specific warranty

Mineshop offers tracked delivery to all 27 EU countries from our warehouses in Ireland and Latvia. Check the selected product's delivery details and the delivery information before ordering. This guide makes no stock assertion or dispatch-time promise. For a multi-component build, review each item separately.

Confirm warranty coverage for the exact cooler, retain the invoice and keep unused mounting hardware with the product. No blanket warranty duration or maintenance promise is stated here. Read the return policy for the relevant process. Resolve uncertain fit or socket support before installation, and follow the manufacturer's safety and maintenance instructions.

Cooling buying FAQ

Does socket support guarantee a cooler will fit?

No. Also check case height, memory clearance, nearby components and the required mounting hardware.

Is a 360mm radiator exactly 360mm long?

Not necessarily. The size class is not the complete assembly dimension; compare the published radiator measurements.

Is liquid cooling always quieter?

No. Noise depends on the fans, pump, control settings and workload. Compare the exact design and your installation.

Can I compare every cooler by TDP rating alone?

No. Ratings are not necessarily measured in the same way and do not replace checking the whole thermal arrangement.
